'Can play 3 or 4 different positions' - Rangers boss hails Super Eagle after shining vs Celtic
Published: August 29, 2021
Rangers manager for this afternoon's Old Firm derby against Celtic, Gary McAllister singled out Leon Balogun for special praise following his superb display.
Without Steven Gerrard in the dugout due to a Covid-19 outbreak at the club, the Light Blues earned a hard fought 1-0 victory over their city rivals thanks to Filip Helander's winning goal in the 66th minute.
Rangers broke the deadlock when the Sweden international headed home a corner kick from Barisic.
Balogun was asked to play at right-back due to the unavailability of Nathan Patterson and James Tavernier, who were both forced to miss the game after coming in contact with a positive Covid case.
The Nigeria international was outstanding against the Hoops, he made more tackles and clearances than any of his teammates and only Glen Kamara won the ball back more times.
McAllister admitted that Rangers signed Balogun last summer because of his ability to play in multiple defensive positions.
Speaking to Sky Sports via BBC, he said : "From one to eleven we were outstanding, but if I have to pick one Leon Balogun was superb.
"His defensive display showed why we brought him here. He can play three or four different positions."
Balogun and Aribo went the distance in their last match before they are expected to report for international duty later this week.
