Rangers' Super Eagles defender named in SPFL TOTW after starring against Celtic
Published: September 02, 2021
Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun has been named in the latest SPFL Team of the Week by Craig Fowler from a View from the Terrace.
Balogun earned rave reviews for his performance during Rangers' 1-0 win over city rivals Celtic in the first Old Firm derby of the season last weekend.
Deployed as a right-back in the absence of Nathan Patterson and James Tavernier, the Nigeria national teamer did not look out of place at any point in the game even though he is predominantly a center back.
According to statistics from Whoscored.com, the former Brighton & Hove man made a game-high seven clearances and a team-high four tackles, and was accurate in 73.7 percent of his passes.
In the SPFL Team of the Week, Balogun occupied the right-back spot in a 4-4-2 formation.
Balogun came in for criticism after Rangers were defeated by Malmo in a UEFA Champions League qualifier last month, and was not given minutes in three of the next four matches played by the Light Blues, but redeemed himself with a fine display against the Hoops at Ibrox Stadium.
The 33-year-old had a clause of a one-year contract extension activated in April after helping Rangers win the Premiership title.
