Nigerian midfielder misses out on Chelsea's UEFA CL squad after failing to secure summer move
Published: September 06, 2021
Nigeria-eligible midfielder Tariq Uwakwe will not make his Champions League debut for Chelsea in the first half of the season.
European Champions Chelsea have submitted their squad list for the group stage of the Champions League and the London-born former England U20 international has not been selected.
Uwakwe would have been listed as a club trained player if he was picked by manager Thomas Tuchel as he has been on the books of Chelsea for fourteen years, having joined the academy as an U9.
The 21-year-old was angling for a transfer, be it temporary or permanent, in the recently concluded summer transfer window but a move did not happen.
Sheffield Wednesday boss Darren Moore ran the rule over Uwakwe during the pre-season but the trial ended without him bagging a deal.
The left-footed midfielder or wing-back is expected to maintain his fitness by playing for Chelsea U23s in the Premier League 2 before the window reopens in January.
Uwakwe was shipped out on loan to League One club Accrington Stanley for the whole of last season in a bid to get playing opportunities after failing to break into Chelsea's first team.
