2022 WCQ: Rohr pinpoints two key Cape Verde strikers Super Eagles must keep an eye on
Published: September 06, 2021
The Super Eagles have concluded their final training session before taking to the Estádio Municipal Adérito Sena, Mindelo turf for a 2022 World Cup qualifier against Cape Verde.
Under the guidance of manager Gernot Rohr, the players had a feel of the turf on Monday evening.
The German football tactician has revealed that he has the lowdown on the Blue Sharks, and identified two of their strikers who could pose a serious threat to the Super Eagles.
One of the Cape Verde players to watch out for is Ryan Mendes who played for French clubs Le Havre and Lille in the past, and the other is ex-Bourg-Péronnas and Dijon goal poacher Júlio Tavares.
Nigeria and Cape Verde have met only once and that was back in January 2013 in a friendly in Faro, Portugal which ended in a scoreless draw.
When asked what he knows about the Cape Verde side, Rohr stated : "They like to play quickly forward, they have very good strikers, they have this wonderful player Mendes and Tavares, who played in France also, so we know them. They have very good offensive players.
"They are playing very often with three in the back, we know that they like to come back to be sure that they don't concede but we have our tactics to score a goal and to win the match.
"That is what we want to do, we know that it is not easy especially with this handicap of ten players missing and two days less of recovery but it will be a challenge.
"We have to show fighting spirit with a good technical football like we always."
