Rohr admits it won't be easy for Nigeria's all-time top scorer in Serie A to get Eagles invite
Published: September 18, 2021
Manager Gernot Rohr has admitted that it will not be easy for Simeon Tochukwu Nwankwo to be handed a call-up to the Super Eagles because the Salernitana newbie is behind in his pecking order of strikers.
Simy made a splash in the Italian top-flight last season, netting 20 goals to take his overall tally for Crotone in the league alone to 30 goals, an achievement that saw him overtake ex-Inter Milan wonderkid Obafemi Martins as Nigeria's all-time top goalscorer in Serie A history.
The 29-year-old has been in the international wilderness for more than three years with his last appearance for the national team coming in a 2018 World Cup clash against Argentina.
Without revealing names, Rohr inferred that he trusts the likes of Victor Osimhen, Kelechi Iheanacho, Paul Onuachu and Terem Moffi more than the Crotone loanee.
Speaking to Tuttomercatoweb.com, the former Bayern Munich defender said : "Simy is another player at the center of our scouting, but in the Nigeria squad we have many high profile strikers.
"There is a great competition in the role of center forward and it will not be easy for him to carve out space.
"In any case, I take advantage of it, to send a big good luck for this season to Osimhen with Napoli and Simy with Salernitana! ".
Since debuting in an international friendly against Democratic Republic of Congo in May 2018, Simy has made four appearances for the Super Eagles, logging 24 minutes in total off the bench in his last three matches.
