'He always wants to play' - Genk coach reveals talks with Onuachu over bench role vs STVV
Published: September 20, 2021
Racing Genk manager John van den Brom has admitted that he informed Paul Onuachu of his decision not to start him before Sunday's Belgian First Division A clash against Sint-Truidense VV.
With the games coming thick and fast, Van den Brom had to rotate his squad or put them at risk of picking up injuries.
The decision saw Onuachu start on the bench and ex-Chelsea striker Ike Ugbo handed his starting debut for the Limburg club.
Prior to the trip to STVV, the Nigeria international had started all the eight matches played by Genk since the beginning of August.
John van den Brom revealed that Onuachu was eager to start and was delighted to see him net the winning goal off the bench.
In quotes relayed by voetbalbelgie.be, the Dutch football manager said : "Paul is Paul, a phenomenon. He always wants to play. That's why I spoke to him separately.
"After the match he said 'thank you coach'. He went in so strong. You can always use it."
Onuachu has had a brilliant start to the 2021-2022 season, scoring six goals in ten matches across all competitions.
