'He's a really good goalkeeper' - Feyenoord's Dessers lauds Super Eagles star Okoye
Published: October 06, 2021
Feyenoord striker Cyriel Dessers has been in the international wilderness for close to a year mainly as a result of his lack of playing opportunities at parent club Racing Genk.
Eligible for Nigeria through his mother, the Leuven-born center forward made his senior debut off the bench as the Super Eagles were held to a 1-1 draw by Tunisia in October 2020.
Another Rotterdam-based player in Maduka Okoye was named in the latest Nigeria squad for their 2022 World Cup qualifiers against Central African Republic and finally showed up in camp on Wednesday morning ahead of the national team's final workout.
Dessers had kind words for the Sparta Rotterdam glovesman, labeling him a 'really good goalkeeper' and is looking forward to facing him in the derby on October 31.
"I've talked about the Eredivisie with Maduka in the past. He's a really good goalkeeper and plays a lot," Dessers said to Dutch public broadcaster Rijnmond.
"I don't, so I'll have to be patient. I'm looking forward to playing against him in the league anyway ."
Okoye has kept five clean sheets in ten appearances for the Super Eagles while conceding eight goals, including four in one game against Sierra Leone.
