'Biggest names don't always win' - French-born Cape Verde star sends warning to Super Eagles
Published: October 15, 2021
French-born Cape Verde international Steven Fortès has set his sights on representing the Blue Sharks at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and underlined that the Super Eagles are standing in their way of achieving that goal.
After four rounds of matches in Group C of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, Nigeria are leading the way with nine points, two more than second-placed Cape Verde, whom they face in Lagos on matchday six next month.
The Super Eagles could have been home and dry after the games in October, only for them to suffer a shock 1-0 home loss to Central African Republic.
Lens loanee Fortès was not in the Cape Verde squad that suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of the Super Eagles last month.
"It would be incredible to go to Qatar, but that's a World Cup for any player. Everything is possible and we believe in it," Fortès said to Het Nieuwsblad via Voetabl Primeur.
"For that we have to deal with Nigeria, a big team. But in football, the biggest names don't always win."
Africa's most successful team in the World Cup in terms of points accumulated, Nigeria have qualified for six of the last seven World Cups, reaching the last sixteen on three occasions 1994, 1998 and 2014.
