Ex-Liverpool striker Awoniyi 4 goals away from matching personal single-season record
Published: October 24, 2021One-cap Nigeria international Taiwo Awoniyi continued his blistering goalscoring form for Union Berlin by getting his name on the scoresheet in a 1-1 draw with Stuttgart at the Mercedes-Benz Arena on Sunday evening.
Just past the half hour mark, the former Liverpool striker fired in his seventh goal in this season's Bundesliga following a counter attack by the visitors.
It seemed Die Eisernen would be returning to the capital with all three points but Stuttgart had other ideas as Wabil Faghir beat the goalkeeper in the third minute of stoppage time to salvage a draw for the hosts.
Given Awoniyi's recent goalscoring exploits, it won't be surprising if he earns another call-up to the Super Eagles for the upcoming 2022 World Cup qualifiers against Liberia and Cape Verde.
Only twice before has Awoniyi managed to score more than seven league goals in a single season, in 2017-2018 when he netted nine goals in 29 matches wearing the colours of Royal Excel Mouscron, and the following season he mustered 11 goals for the same club.
With 25 games still to play in the Bundesliga, the 2013 U17 World Cup winner only needs to score four more goals to equal his career high of eleven.
The 24-year-old Awoniyi has also impressed in the Europa Conference League, scoring four goals in five games including the qualifiers.
