Mourinho makes comment about Osimhen as he explains Napoli's tactics vs AS Roma
Published: October 24, 2021
Napoli failed to equal their club record of nine consecutive wins in a single Serie A season following a goalless draw with AS Roma at the Stadio Olimpico (Roma) on Sunday evening.
In a game billed as a showdown between two of the best young strikers in the Italian top-flight, Roma's Tammy Abraham and Napoli's Victor Osimhen, the two players failed to add to their tallies for the season.
The Nigeria international thought he had won it for the Blues late on, only to see his headed goal correctly ruled out for offside.
Before his disallowed goal, the Napoli number 9 came close to breaking the deadlock but his effort hit the woodwork.
Speaking after the game, Roma manager Jose Mourinho highlighted that Napoli had an offensive game plan tailored to the strengths of Osimhen.
"The game had a lot of transitions in it – they tried to play really directly through Osimhen and then bring others into play around him," the former Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham coach told Roma's official website.
"When we dropped a bit deeper then Insigne started to play in central areas, and that was when it became important for Veretout and Cristante to close that space down."
Napoli's next game is against Bologna on Thursday, before a trip to Salernitana next Sunday.
