NFF supremo reveals talks with ex-Man Utd star over playing for Nigeria at AFCON 2021
Published: October 25, 2021
Nigerian Federation supremo Amaju Pinnick is hoping to convince former Manchester United star Odion Ighalo to play for the Super Eagles at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
Ighalo called time on his international career when the ovation was loudest,
shortly after winning the top scorer award at the 2019 Africa Cup of
Nations.
The former Flying Eagles skipper has impressed very much with his performances for Al-Shabab in the new season, with eight goals from nine matches in the Saudi Arabian Professional League.
Pinnick has been doing everything possible to convince Ighalo to rescind his
decision to quit the national team without success but he is giving it one more try before the upcoming World Cup qualifiers and AFCON 2021.
"I had a long conversation with Odion Ighalo, personally i believe we need experience in our attack to combine with our energetically youthful Osinmeh, Onuachu, Kelechi et al," Pinnick said in a press release.
"Odion body language is very positive. We are also in touch with his agents and club.
"The vibe going into these last two games and indeed AFCON is very good."
Napoli striker Victor Osimhen has not done badly since stepping into the
shoes of Ighalo, scoring seven goals and registering six assists in ten competitive matches.
