Super Eagles GK Okoye doubtful to return to action against AZ after agent's reveal
Published: December 02, 2021
Wessel Weezenberg, who handles the affairs of Maduka Okoye, has provided an update on the injury suffered by the Sparta Rotterdam goalkeeper during the first half of the 1-0 loss to Ajax Amsterdam last weekend.
The Super Eagles star had to be substituted midway through the first half after suffering a shoulder-related injury.
Weezenberg, who also looks after another Nigeria international in Benfica loanee Tyronne Ebuehi, has brought good and bad news for Super Eagles and Sparta Rotterdam fans respectively.
The former Feyenoord midfielder revealed that Okoye is rated as doubtful to take to the pitch for Sparta Rotterdam's upcoming Eredivisie clash against AZ Alkmaar on Sunday, December 5, but confirmed that Nigeria's first-choice goalkeeper would have sufficiently recovered in time for the Africa Cup of Nations.
"I don't think Okoye will play against AZ, but the injury is not serious, " Weezenberg told allnigeriasoccer.com.
"Yes, he is okay for the Africa Cup of Nations."
Okoye's availability for the AFCON would be welcome news to manager Gernot Rohr with three of his players Victor Osimhen, Oghenekaro Etebo and Kingsley Michael ruled out of the tournament in Cameroon due to the injuries they suffered on club duties.
Before the visit of Ajax Amsterdam to Het Kasteel, Okoye had started and completed all the thirteen matches contested by Sparta Rotterdam in the Dutch top-flight.
