CAF describes as 'fake news' reports suggesting that AFCON 2021 is on brink of cancellation
The Confederation of African Football has moved quickly to dismiss viral reports in the local and foreign press that the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations is on the brink of being cancelled.

Reports emanating from the French media previously claimed that Covid-19's new variant omicron could lead to a cancellation of the 33rd edition of the Africa Cup of Nations.

The report added that English Premier League clubs would like to keep their players as those called up have to undergo quarantine upon their return to the United Kingdom, which would deprive clubs of their players for a longer period.

The Confederation of African Football has cleared the air on the cancellation of the AFCON, with CAF Head of Media Relations and Operations, Lux September describing the reports as 'fake news'.

September added : "Of course these are lies. There has not been a single meeting where this was discussed.

"But we all know the source of misinformation from some 'lobby' groups . They always undermine Africa. We know them".

The secretary general of CAF, Véron Mosengo-Omba reassured on Tuesday during his visit to Yaounde that the Olembe Stadium will be ready for the opening game of the tournament between Cameroon and Burkina Faso on January 9.

Three-time African champions Nigeria will do battle with Egypt, Sudan and Guinea Bissau in Group D of the Africa Cup of Nations.

The Super Eagles under the tutelage of interim boss Augustine Eguavoen are set to begin a training camp after Christmas.
