Rangers' Nigeria star to undergo late fitness test ahead of Boxing Day clash vs St Mirren
Published: December 24, 2021
Nigeria central defender Leon Balogun faces a late fitness test to make Rangers' matchday squad for the Scottish Premiership meeting with St Mirren on Boxing Day.
The possible return of the former Wigan Atheltic and Brighton & Hove man will be a big boost for Nigeria as he is set to be included on the roster for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
Another Nigerian defender in Calvin Bassey has stepped in for Balogun and gave a good account of himself, helping the club keep six clean sheets since Giovanni van Bronckhorst took over the managerial reins.
The Dutch football tactician sounded optimistic about the availability of Balogun for the visit of the Saints, saying he took part in today's training session.
Speaking to reporters at Friday's press conference, Van Bronckhorst said : "No injury concerns. Leon is joining us today with the session so we have to see if he is fit enough to be available for Sunday".
Rangers, who are unbeaten under the tenure of Van Bronckhorst, are first in the table with 48 points after fifteen wins, three draws and only one loss.
