'I'm excited' - Brentford midfielder buzzing ahead of big month with Super Eagles at AFCON
Published: December 30, 2021
Brentford star Frank Onyeka is set to represent Nigeria in his first major tournament - the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations which kicks off in Cameroon on January 9.
It is almost a foregone conclusion that Onyeka will make his Africa Cup of Nations debut next month, with interim Super Eagles boss Augustine Eguavoen naming only three defensive midfielders in his finalized squad list, the others being Wilfred Ndidi and Joe Aribo.
The former FC Midtjylland man says he is more excited than ever to represent Nigeria at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Speaking after Wednesday's loss to Manchester City in the Premier League, Onyeka told Brentford's official website : "Yes, it is my first time you know representing my country in the Africa Cup of Nations so I'm looking forward to it, and I'm excited to represent my country."
At the moment, all Onyeka's attention is focused on Brentford's next Premier League match against Aston Villa on January 2 ahead of his trip to Africa to join his international teammates.
The Super Eagles star has taken a lot of positives from Brentford's narrow defeat to Manchester City on Wednesday night, restricting Pep Guardiola's side to only three shots on target, which speaks volumes of how well the Bees defended.
"We're looking forward to Aston Villa, the mindset the team has, played against City, the energy we had the team I think we are going to bring it to Aston Villa on Sunday."
Onyeka, 23, has taken part in sixteen of the eighteen matches Brentford have contested in their maiden Premier League season - ten of which he started.
