Ten players including Onyekuru, Olayinka train with Super Eagles in Abuja ahead of AFCON 2021
Published: January 01, 2022
Ten players named in the adjusted Nigeria squad list for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations trained in Abuja on New Year's Day, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
Olympiakos striker Henry Onyekuru and Slavia Prague winger Peter Olayinka participated in the workout under the guidance of interim boss Augustine Eguavoen.
Onyekuru was summoned to the national team to replace Napoli frontman Victor Osimhen, who was forced to withdraw from the AFCON roster after testing positive for coronavirus and missing a scheduled medical checkup.
Omonia Nicosa goalkeeper Francis Uzoho will miss his side's trip to Pafos on Wednesday having reported for international duty and he was also involved in today's training session.
With the arrival of Uzoho, it means only Sparta Rotterdam's Maduka Okoye is still being expected when it comes to the goalkeeping department.
The other players monitored at close quarters by Eguavoen are Taiwo Awoniyi, Daniel Akpeyi, John Noble, Chidera Ejuke, Olisa Ndah, Chidozie Awaziem and Sadiq Umar.
Several of the invited players are expected to report for duty in the nation's capital next week before the team flies out to Cameroon for the Africa Cup of Nations.
