AFCON 2021: Fringe Super Eagles player reacts after receiving a surprise call-up to Nigeria squad
Published: January 03, 2022
Peter Olayinka has spoken of his happiness after receiving a surprise call-up to link up with the Nigeria squad ahead of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations which kicks off in Cameroon on January 9.
The Slavia Prague winger and striker was added to the Super Eagles' Africa Cup of Nations roster following the withdrawals of Napoli striker Victor Osimhen and Watford talisman Emmanuel Dennis.
Prior to his unexpected call-up, Olayinka was due to fly with the Slavia Prague squad to Algarve for a training camp from 5 to 24 January 2022.
With the likes of Osimhen, Paul Onuachu, Kelechi Iheanacho and Moses Simon untouchables in former coach Gernot Rohr's squad over the last two years, Olayinka found it difficult to earn a roster spot, logging a paltry ten minutes combined across two international friendlies.
"I'm really excited, it's a dream come true for me. I'm really looking forward to the tournament, I can't wait to give it my all," Olayinka said to Slavia Prague's official website.
Olayinka won't be missed much during his time with the Nigeria national team as Slavia Prague don't play their first competitive game of 2022 until 5th or 6th February against MFK Karviná,
In the current season, the 26-year-old has scored six goals while providing two assists in 21 appearances, including seven in European competition.
