'Everyone is in top form' - Kaizer Chiefs star discusses competition for Nigeria no. 1 AFCON
Published: January 04, 2022
The Super Eagles are under a new management and every position including the goalkeeping role is up for grabs at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.
Daniel Akpeyi, Francis Uzoho, Maduka Okoye and John Noble are competing for just one spot in the starting eleven.
The Super Eagles goalkeeping gloves have changed hands over the last four years from Uzoho who was first choice at the 2018 World Cup to Akpeyi who was the undisputed starter at the last AFCON before handing it to Okoye after the tournament in Egypt.
Despite the intense competition, Akpeyi was full of praise for those competing with him for a spot in the starting lineup and vowed to support the player that gets the nod from Eguavoen to be in goal.
"It is a good development. Maduka has been doing so well and Uzoho is there as well and probably Noble is also there, and I believe in these goalkeepers," Akpeyi said.
"If any one of them is playing, I'm going to support them one hundred percent. I think everyone is in top form at the moment".
The Super Eagles have a good blend of experience and youth in the Africa Cup of Nations squad, the right combination that can go the distance in a tournament, with Akpeyi the oldest player in the squad at 35.
On his expectations for the tournament, Akpeyi said : "As usual Nigerians always expect us to do well in the tournament.
"I'm very sure that the players that have been invited into the camp they know what is obtainable and what we need to make Nigerians happy.
"I just hope that we keep the focus and the most important thing is to take one game at a time so the first focus is the first game which is against Egypt".

"They have my support, they are like younger brothers to me, I am only going to support them if I don't get my chance.
