Confirmed Nigeria starting XI : Two former Chelsea stars, ex-Liverpool striker, Aribo start
Published: January 11, 2022
Nigeria's caretaker coach Augustine Eguavoen has announced his starting lineup for Tuesday evening's 2021 Africa Cup of Nations Group D match against seven-time champions Egypt at Roumdé Adjia Stadium, Garoua.
The former K.V. Kortrijk fullback has named a similar looking lineup to the team he most commonly used during the training sessions and the last practice game against Coton Sport.
Eguavoen has started with Maduka Okoye in goal and the Watford loanee has been given the nod over Francis Uzoho, Daniel Akpeyi and John Noble.
The late arrival of right fullback Tyronne Ebuehi to camp has opened the door for Chelsea academy product Ola Aina to make his sixth career start for the Super Eagles at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Porto left-back Zaidu Sanusi is preferred ahead of latecomer Jamilu Collins, with William Troost-Ekong and former Chelsea star Kenneth Omeruo pairing at center back.
Wilfred Ndidi features in the holding midfield position along with Glasgow Rangers maestro Joe Aribo.
Former Liverpool striker Taiwo Awoniyi starts in the number nine role, with Kelechi Iheanacho, Moses Simon and Samuel Chukwueze the other attacking options.
Nigeria's starting lineup : Okoye; Aina, Troost-Ekong, Omeruo, Sanusi; Ndidi, Aribo, Iheanacho; Chukwueze, Awoniyi, Simon
