'Why should I be relieved after scoring?' - Awoniyi says his job is to score for Super Eagles
Published: January 18, 2022Former Liverpool striker Taiwo Awoniyi insists his job is to score goals for the Super Eagles after opening his account for the senior national team in a 3-1 win over Sudan on Saturday evening.
Just before halftime, Awoniyi doubled the advantage when Iheanacho's free-kick ricocheted off his head and into the net after a blunder by the Sudanese goalkeeper.
The Union Berlin star says he does not feel relieved netting his first goal in Super Eagles colours, saying the team's goals come first over his personal objectives.
On whether he was relieved to score his first goal for Nigeria's senior team, Awoniyi told allnigeriasoccer.com at the end of training on Monday night : "I think for us the most important thing is the victory and for me to score I am
not under any depression so why should I feel relieved after scoring? I think it is my job to score for the country."
Awoniyi is among a select group of players to have played for the Golden Eaglets, Flying Eagles and Dream Team before graduating into the senior team.
"For me it is a great privilege, every player is happy to be here because it is a great privilege and honor to represent your country.
"Many players have done it also, the likes of Ahmed Musa, Kelechi Iheanacho, Wlfred Ndidi.
"Like I always say it is a great privilege to represent the country and for you to be here is just believing in your dream and to achieve it is something you should be happy and proud of."
Awoniyi was in action for 161 minutes combined spread across three competitive matches before opening his account for the three-time African champions.
