Published: January 18, 2022
Bayern Munich's Poland goal machine Robert Lewandowski has won The Best FIFA Men's Player 2021, beating PSG superstar Lionel Messi and Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah to the prestigious accolade.
Lewandowski was key as Bayern Munich won the German Bundesliga, DFL-Supercup and Club World Cup, and tallied 69 goals for club and country in the 2021 calendar year comprising 43 in the league, 11 in the UEFA Champions League, 2 in the DFB Pokal and 13 for Poland.
He is the second player to win the award twice since its inception in 2016, following in the footsteps of Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo.
The voting has been revealed to show how Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa, Super Eagles chief coach Salisu Yusuf and Christian Okpara picked their top three players of 2021.
Musa was spot on when choosing the top rated player on the planet, picking Lewandowski to win The Best FIFA Men's Player, while he opted for Mohamed Salah and Jorginho in second and third place respectively.
Regarding the votes of the national team coaches, Chelsea midfielder Jorginho was Salisu Yusuf's number one pick with Lionel Messi in second place and Manchester City's Kevin De Bruyne as his third choice.
The Guardian Nigeria's sports editor Okpara voted for Chelsea's N'Golo Kante, Lionel Messi and Mohamed Salah in that order.
