Rohr picks versatile Super Eagles star as his best player so far at AFCON 2021
Published: January 21, 2022
Former Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr has picked Moses Simon as his best player so far at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, describing the Nantes winger as a 'versatile player'.
Apart from his goal and assist, Simon has lit up the tournament in Cameroon with his dribbling and pace on the right flank, and would have scored arguably the best goal of AFCON 2021 if his powerful shot had not cannoned off the crossbar in Nigeria's last match against Guinea-Bissau.
Under Rohr, Simon was sometimes asked to play as a wing-back due to his defensive qualities though the right-footed player is at his best when used an inverted winger.
Speaking on Simon, his best player so far at AFCON 2021, Rohr said to French daily newspaper Ouest France : "He is decisive, he is an extraordinary boy whom I have always supported and sometimes played in complicated positions, alone in the channel. Because he also defends. He is versatile.
"He found his regularity with Nantes, even if with Nigeria he always had it. He missed the last World Cup through injury at the last moment.
"He has the opportunity, this time, to show his qualities to the whole world."
Simon totaled thirty one appearances for the Super Eagles with Rohr in the dugout, scoring two goals and providing four assists.
