Nigeria 0 Tunisia 1 : Msakni's long-range effort ends Super Eagles' fantastic run
Published: January 23, 2022
Nigeria's Super Eagles on Sunday evening crashed out of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations after a 1-0 defeat to Tunisia as Youssef Msakni's goal separated both sides.
The Super Eagles created four goal scoring chances in the first half but none of them were on target while the Tunisians had one attempt to their name.
Wilfred Ndidi made a vital goal line block which could have put the north Africans ahead but generally both teams sized each other up in the first half but produced few moments of promise.
Tunisia grabbed their goal in the 47th minute when Youssef Msakni's shot from outside the box bounced deceptively to beat Maduka Okoye whose defenders failed to close down the danger man.
Alex Iwobi was red carded after the initial yellow was upgraded for a terribly dangerous tackle on Msakni after a VAR check barely five minutes after coming off the bench along with Peter Olayinka.
Moses Simon's close shot afterwards was parried away by the Tunisian keeper, Bechir Ben Said.
Okoye kept out a well struck shot by Ben Slimani in the 73rd minute for a corner.
Sadiq Umar pounced on a through pass to chase the ball. He ends up winning a corner after the Tunisian keeper and his defender bumped into each other.
The UD Almeria striker then won a free kick with barely eight minutes left on the clock but Moses Simon blazed his set piece wide.
The Eagles desperately fired several shots with Ndidi and Umar going for long range strikes but they were not close to restoring parity while Sadiq Umar had the hopes of a nation on his shoulders when his 90th minute low shot rolled out for a goal kick.
