Former Arsenal star breaks his silence after Nigeria's shock exit from AFCON 2021
Former Arsenal star Alex Iwobi has broken his silence following Nigeria's shock exit from the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday night.

The Nigeria international had not commented on social media after the 1-0 loss to north African giants Tunisia and even deactivated the comment section on his Instagram account.

Iwobi was one of the two major players scapegoated for the defeat to Tunisia, the other being goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, only because the Everton winger was shown a straight red card for a heavy challenge on Youssef Msakni five minutes after coming off the bench.

The Hale End Academy product, who had been keeping a low profile in the wake of the defeat, believes the Super Eagles will return to winning ways, starting with their 2022 World Cup playoff versus Ghana and has thanked the fans for the support during their campaign in Cameroon.

Writing on Instagram, Iwobi said : "Moments of joy can quickly turn into pain and anguish. As much as it's a part of football, we came for more.

"Our fans who shared these moments with us both in Cameroon and across the world deserved more!

"The beauty of the game is the next moment of jubilation is never too far round the corner.

"We will be back to fight for our nation, stronger. We owe it to you, and I owe it to myself.

"Thank you for all the words of support and encouragement - it doesn't go unnoticed."

Iwobi made four appearances, including one start, at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, logging 143 minutes in total.
