'It was unbelievable to see' - GvB reacts to ref's decision not to stop game after collision between Nigerians
Published: February 03, 2022
Celtic have replaced their city rivals Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premiership table after a convincing 3-0 win at Celtic Park on Wednesday night.
There was an Old Firm debut for Calvin Bassey and he was joined in the starting lineup by Joe Aribo while fit-again center back Leon Balogun entered the game as a substitute in the 46th minute.
Rangers were blown away in the first half by a phenomenal performance from Celtic as Reo Hatate scored two goals from the edge of the box to put the home team 2-0 up before setting up Liel Abada for the Hoops' third just before halftime.
One of the talking points of the game was the decision of the referee, Bobby Madden not to cancel the opener scored by Hatate in the fifth minute despite protests from Rangers players.
Aribo and Bassey ran into each other as they attempted to defend a corner and the defender clearly suffered a head knock in the build up to the goal but play was allowed to go on.
Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst has reacted to the decision of the referee not to stop the game following the collision between the two Nigerian players.
"It's for the referee to stop the game, we still had the corner to defend," Van Bronckhorst told Sky Sports via BBC.
"You don't stop when the referee doesn't whistle. It was unbelievable to see."
Last night's loss to Celtic was Rangers first defeat under Giovanni van Bronckhorst and the champions have struggled in 2022 having taken five points from a possible twelve in the Premiership.
