Iwobi misses a half-chance as title-chasing Liverpool beat Everton in Merseyside derby
Published: April 24, 2022
Alex Iwobi started in Everton's 2-0 defeat to title-chasing Liverpool in the Merseyside derby at Anfield on Sunday evening which compounded the Toffees' relegation troubles.
Iwobi has thus started in 16 of his 22 Premier League appearances across their 32 fixtures and has come on as a substitute on six occasions.
Before the kickoff, both sides were separated by 47 points, the highest between both sides in the competition
Abdoulaye Doucouré was sent clear on goal early in the game but his wide went agonizingly wide off target.
Anthony Gordon went down a couple of times but was yellow-carded for simulation in the 25th minute.
Liverpool struggled to get attempts at goal with just one effort from Sadio Mane coming halfway into the first half but it was off target.
Andy Robertson broke the deadlock when he headed home in the 62nd minute from Mo Salah's low cross into the six-yard box just four minutes after Iwobi missed a half-chance when he failed to guide his own header on target at the opposite end.
Divock Origi made it 2-0 five minutes to full time but Everton was lucky enough to still have Richarlison on the pitch after a yellow card was not upgraded to red after he reacted furiously to a foul.
