Ex-Liverpool striker Awoniyi takes his goal involvements for the season to 22 with assist vs Freiburg
Published: May 08, 2022
Union Berlin will be playing in Europe again next season after a 4-1 win over SC Freiburg at the Europa-Park Stadion on Saturday, May 7, but have to wait until the final matchday to know what competition they have qualified for.
The capital outfit have accumulated 54 points from 33 matches having won fifteen games and drawn nine.
Union Berlin had a fantastic start as Grischa Prömel tapped in from close range after Awoniyi's effort hit the post in the 11th minute and Christopher Trimmel doubled their lead when he headed past goalkeeper Flekken in the 30th minute.
Four minutes before halftime, Sheraldo Becker smashed home from a tight angle after he was found by Awoniyi.
And with the assist, his first in this season's Bundesliga, the Nigeria international took his goal involvements for the season to 22 (18 goals, 4 assists) in 42 matches across all competitions.
The former Liverpool striker also provided assists in DFB Pokal matches against Türkgücü München and St. Pauli, and the Europa Conference League qualifying match versus KuPS.
András Schäfer restored Union Berlin's three-goal lead just before the final whistle after Lucas Höler pulled a goal back in the 59th minute.
