Ruud van Nistelrooy blasts PSV Eindhoven for the sale of Madueke to Chelsea
Published: April 01, 2023
PSV Eindhoven manager Ruud van Nistelrooy might have gotten himself into hot water after criticizing his employers for sanctioning the outbound transfers of Noni Madueke and Cody Gakpo in the January transfer window.
Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur academy product Madueke made a return to London, joining Chelsea on a seven-and-a-half-year contract with a club option for the 2030-2031 season, while Gakpo, one of the outstanding players of the 2022 World Cup, switched to Liverpool on a five-and-a-half-year contract.
The two Premier League giants dished out approximately 80 million euros to PSV Eindhoven to land the services of the two players of African descent.
Van Nistelrooy seems to be running out of ideas and has come under fire for PSV's failure to mount a title challenge with eight points separating them from table-toppers Feyenoord.
The Eindhoven club crashed out of the UEFA Europa League after losing to Sevilla over two legs.
Speaking on Friday, Van Nistelrooy stressed that the current performance of PSV is the maximum achievable and referred, among other things, to the sales of Cody Gakpo to Liverpool) and Noni Madueke to Chelsea.
"It's just been a very restless year in which a lot has happened. We have to be realistic about that, but we just keep going," Van Nistelrooy was quoted as saying by Soccernews.
"If this is the year it had to happen, then you don't sell your two best players in the winter."
According to Eindhovens Dagblad, Van Nistelrooy's statements have not gone down well with the PSV higher-ups.
