Ex-Super Eagles coach reveals why Liverpool are struggling this season
Published: April 17, 2023Former Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh has opined that losing the reigning African Footballer of the Year Sadio Mane last summer is the reason behind Liverpool's struggles this season.
The Reds have looked like a shadow of the team that was on the verge of winning the quadruple last season.
They have been dumped out of the Champions League, couldn't make a title challenge in the Premier League, couldn't defend the FA and Carabao Cup trophies they won last season and are 12 points adrift of a Champions League place finish.
Liverpool ended their relationship with Mane last summer despite his success at the club. The Senegalese forward scored 120 goals and recorded 48 assists in 269 appearances while donning the colours of the Reds.
Oliseh in an article published on his website stated that Liverpool would have better off having Mane in the side.
"Mané was instrumental in every aspect of Liverpool's success since day one in 2015; his aggressive and explosive attacking, counter attacking, with or without the ball, unpredictability, variable playing style, goals, assists and most importantly to Klopp's Liverpool playing module, his non-stop "hand lending" to the full backs in his doubling up defensively, immensely helped Robertson and Trent Arnold perform at their best.ever since Mané's departure," Oliseh said on sundayoliseh.tv.
"Liverpool has struggled on all departments and I am totally convinced, if this 2022 World's best player Runner Up had still been at Liverpool and healthy, Liverpool would be singing a different song now".
