Lampard reveals the condition Chukwuemeka, Madueke must meet to be considered for starting spots
Published: April 25, 2023Chelsea interim boss Frank Lampard has revealed that Super Eagles-eligible duo of Noni Madueke and Carney Chukwuemeka will feature for Chelsea in their Premier League encounter against Brentford at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night if the Anglo-Nigerian youngsters prove they deserve to play.
Chukuemeka joined Chelsea last summer from Aston Villa and has struggled for game time since then.
The 19-year-old lack of game time has however worsened since Lampard's appointment.
He has not made the matchday squad in the two Premier League games the former Chelsea player has been in charge of because he was recovering from a knock.
Like Chukwuemeka, Madueke has also found life tough since moving to Chelsea from PSV in the January transfer window.
The England U21 international has also not made it to Chelsea's matchday squad since the arrival of the interim coach.
He also didn't take any part in Chelsea's humbling at the hands of Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League, having not been registered for the competition.
When quizzed about whether Madueke, Chukwuemeka and Mykhailo Mudryk will feature for the Blues tomorrow, Lampard was quoted as saying by Football. London:"If they deserve it, for sure. There are two things. There's the individual work, showing you deserve it.
"I'm fully for that. During my first period at the club, I came in with a transfer ban and losing big players and everyone said 'Of course, the young players get in the team'.
"They got on the team because they deserved it with how they trained. That's a culture and a way you have to have at a top football club. I don't think changes just for the moment, I think it should always be there.
"Players have to train, those seven games and days of training are all opportunities every day to try and show you deserve to be in the team.
"As I think I've probably shown as a coach, if you do that, you'll always get an opportunity with me".
Chukwuemeka has featured for Chelsea 12 times in all competitions, while Madueke has registered 5 appearances for the Blues this season.
