Early birthday present for Iwobi as Everton star scores crucial equaliser in 2-2 draw v Leicester
Published: May 01, 2023
Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi got an early birthday present as he was on target for Everton in a Premier League match against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Monday, two days before turning 27.
The goal was his second of the Premier League in the 2022/2023 season after the first in a 1-2 home defeat to Manchester United on 9 October 2022.
The relegation six-pointer began on a frenetic pace as Iwobi attempted a shot in the eighth minute which was parried away by goalkeeper Daniel Iverson in goal for the Foxes.
Everton then went 1-0 up 15 minutes into the match as Dominic Calvert-Lewin stepped up to convert a penalty after he was fouled inside the box.
Iwobi found Calvert-Lewin on the byline but Leicester cleared their lines.
In the 22nd minute, Leicester equalised through central defender Caglar Söyüncü who produced an exquisite low shot on a swivel.
Iwobi's international teammate, Wilfred Ndidi who had a rather average game while he was on the pitch headed out a tame header which Dwight McNeil pounced on but his eventual shot went off target.
Jamie Vardy put Leicester ahead in the 33rd minute after he received a through pass from James Maddison.
Iwobi had lost possession of the ball which Youri Tielemans intercepted and found the England international, Maddison.
Calvert-Lewin missed a gilt-edged chance to grab his brace while in few seconds later, Vardy's intelligent dink after rounding Jordan Pickford came off the crossbar.
Iwobi then found the back of the net in the 54th minute with a low shot that found the bottom left corner.
Both sides had their late chances to claim a hard fought win but it ended in a four-goal thriller.
