'Definitely built for it' - Ex-Spurs star backs Leicester youth product Bassey for PL move
Published: May 08, 2023
Former Tottenham Hotspur right-back Alan Hutton is backing Calvin Bassey for a Premier League move in the summer.
The Nigeria international transferred to Ajax Amsterdam last summer for a fixed fee of 23 million euros , a further 3.5 million euros in add-ons and a sell-on clause also included in the deal taking him to the Eredivisie giants.
The jury has been out on Bassey because of his lack of ball-playing skills and he has lost his spot in the starting lineup, making one start in the last five matches in the Dutch top-flight.
Hutton is of the opinion that the Nigerian is tailor-made for the Premier League considering that he offers physicality and pace.
A homegrown player, Bassey spent five years at the Leicester Academy but did not play an official game for the first team before heading to Scottish Premiership powerhouse Rangers.
"He is definitely built for it, he has got the pace and the power. It seems like he hasn’t quite fit in with the way Ajax play. I saw that at Rangers a little bit, he was rough around the edges," Hutton told Football Insider.
"Maybe going in to the Premier League suits him as a player. He is so young, he is going to improve.
"It is such a big move early on, so maybe that caught him off guard. But he has definitely got the attributes to make it down south."
Last month, it was sensationally claimed that Ajax Amsterdam rejected a £20m bid from an unnamed Premier League club for the services of Bassey in the winter transfer market.
