'Showed strength and poise' - Premier League's all-time top scorer hails Awoniyi
Published: May 09, 2023Premier League's all-time top scorer with 260 goals, Alan Shearer hailed Taiwo Awoniyi as he included the Nottingham Forest striker in his PL Team of the Week for matchday 35.
The Nigeria national teamer played a key role as Nottingham Forest climbed out of the bottom three after a thrilling 4-3 win over fellow relegation candidates Southampton at the City Ground on Monday night.
Awoniyi netted two goals in three and a half minutes to give Nottingham Forest a two-goal advantage after 20 minutes.
The former Liverpool striker gave Forest the lead in the 18th minute when he shot beyond goalkeeper Alex McCarthy following a counter-attack and did well to hold off a Southampton defender before volleying home to double the advantage.
Awoniyi's performance earned him a place in Shearer's Team of the Week, with the Forest number 9 starting in attack along with Fulham duo Willian and Tom Cairney in a 3-4-3 formation.
On Awoniyi, Shearer said : "Showed strength and poise to score two goals that could just save Nottingham Forest from relegation."
Shearer's Team of the Week has Aaron Ramsdale in goal with a defence containing Nayef Aguerd (West Ham), Craig Dawson (Wolverhampton Wanderers) and James Tarkowski (Everton), while Martin Odegaard (Arsenal), Abdoulaye Doucoure (Everton), Ilkay Gundogan (Manchester City) and Dwight McNeil (Everton) are the midfielders.
