Official: Super Eagles star Balogun among 4 players of Nigerian descent released by QPR
Published: May 11, 2023
With a statement on their official website, Championship club Queens Park Rangers have announced their retained and released list following the conclusion of the 2022-2023 season.
Four players of Nigerian descent are among six players who will leave the Hoops when their contracts expire at the end of June.
Super Eagles star Leon Balogun, Kaduna-born forward Ody Alfa, Tottenham Hotspur academy product Luke Amos and former Republic of Ireland youth teamer of Nigerian descent Olamide Shodipo have all been released.
Balogun has been invited back for pre-season preparations as part of his recovery from injury.
The 34-year-old appeared in sixteen official matches for Queens Park Rangers, scoring one goal which came against his former employers Wigan Athletic.
Amos joined QPR initially on loan in the summer 2019 before inking a full deal the following season, and went on to make 95 appearances, scoring eight goals.
Shodipo joined Queens Park Rangers as a schoolboy, rising through the ranks before making his first team debut in a Championship clash with Leeds United on the opening day of the 2016-2017 campaign.
Overall, the winger is credited with 44 appearances across all competitions for the Hoops.
Alfa enjoyed loan spells at Atlético Baleares, Billericay Town, Maidenhead United, Dartford, Aldershot Town and Chelmsford City as a Queens Park Rangers player.
Meanwhile, England U20 international of Nigerian descent Tim Iroegbunam has returned to his parent club Aston Villa following the end of his loan spell.
