'Had clear talent' - Lampard reveals talks with Madueke in a bid to help winger rediscover form
Published: May 13, 2023
Chelsea interim boss, Frank Lampard has explained why Noni Madueke initially struggled under him and how the winger has resuscitated his Chelsea career in recent weeks.
Lampard also added that he sat down with the former PSV star when he arrived at the club in a bid to rediscover his form.
Maduke failed to make the matchday squad in Lampard's first two Premier League games but has seen his fortune improve recently, having started Chelsea's last two games in the Premier League against Arsenal and Bournemouth.
He was one of the players Chelsea acquired in the January transfer window but had failed to impress until recently.
The England U21 international of Nigerian descent netted Chelsea's only goal against Arsenal and he was the Blues' most lively forward in their 3-1 win over Bournemouth last weekend, being a thorn in the flesh of the Cherries' left-back, Matías Viña.
There's certainly talent in the building," Lampard was quoted as saying by Football. London.
"I think Noni is a good example of an individual that in the first week of training had clear talent but I wanted to see a bit more.
"I had that conversation with him and he showed me more and he's come into the games and showed me probably as much his talent but his personality to come in in a tough moment, take the ball and show glimpses of his talent."
The Chelsea legend continued : "It won't just stop with him, but those sort of players - I've said before in press conferences - they need stability around them to take forward their own game and they haven't had that this season.
"So that's probably something I've seen that I think probably other people have seen this season."
The 21-year-old Madueke has registered eight appearances for Chelsea, scoring just one goal.
