Brighton's link with Fiorentina ace: Bassey's chances of joining Seagulls reduce
Published: July 16, 2023
Brighton & Hove's interest in Calvin Bassey dates back to last summer but the former Rangers man opted to join Ajax Amsterdam for a Nigerian record fee for a defender.
It was previously reported that an unnamed Premier League club made a €23million bid for the services of Bassey in the January transfer window but the offer was rejected by Ajax Amsterdam.
After a disappointing first season in the Netherlands, Bassey has been linked again with a return to England this summer, with Fabrizio Romano revealing that Brighton made contacts for the Nigerian as a new left-sided central defender.
Now, the chances of the Leicester City academy product joining Brighton have reduced in recent days with Romano updating that Fiorentina defender Igor is on Brighton's list as new left-footed centre-back.
The Italian transfer market expert added that Igor has already agreed personal terms with Brighton, but both clubs have not yet reached an agreement.
Bassey resumed pre-season training at Ajax on Wednesday amid speculation surrounding his future at the four-time European champions.
The 23-year-old, who made 39 appearances in all competitions last season, is still under contract with the Amsterdam club until June 30, 2027.
