What Rangers fans sang after Dessers scored 17th goal of the season in record-breaking game
Published: March 30, 2024
Rangers returned to the top of the Scottish Premiership table after a 3-1 win over Hibernian at the Ibrox Stadium on Saturday evening.
After Myziane Malida scored to cancel out James Tavernier's opener, Cyriel Dessers netted in the seventh minute of first half stoppage time to give the Light Blues a 2-1 lead at the break.
James Tavernier created a British record with his 131st career goal as he became Britain's highest-ever scoring defender in history, surpassing former Scotland full-back Graham Alexander with whom he previously shared the record.
The Nigeria international, in his first game after the March internationals against Ghana and Mali, headed home after a fine delivery from Todd Cantwell, to the delight of the Rangers fans.
And in doing so, he took his tally for the season to seventeen across all competitions, comprising 13 in the Scottish Premiership, and one goal each in the Europa League, Champions League qualifiers, SFA Cup and League Cup.
The former Feyenoord Rotterdam and Heracles Almelo marksman has started to endear himself to the Rangers fans after a tough start to his career at Rangers.
BBC Scotland pundit Kheredine Idessane noted that the Rangers fans sang the praises of Dessers after he found the back of the net against Hibernian.
'The game had turned again. Terrific cross from the Rangers' right from Todd Cantwell and Cyriel Dessers delivers with the header, crashing it in off the underside of the crossbar to restore the home side's lead,' Idessane said during The BBC coverage of the game
'Nice one Cyril, nice on son' sing the Rangers fans, who'll enjoy their half time cuppa all the more now, you fancy. Good game this.'
After 30 matches played, Rangers have garnered 73 points, two more than bitter rivals Celtic.
