Super Eagles assistant coach, Remo Stars GK leave Nigeria as friends; land in Abidjan as foes
Published: November 10, 2024
Remo Stars' head coach, Daniel Ogunmodede, and goalkeeper Pablo Obassa Adebiyi have landed in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, in preparation for the important 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between Nigeria and Benin.
Adebiyi, who was summoned by Gernot Rohr to represent Benin, will find himself on the opposing side facing his own coach, Ogunmodede, who serves as the assistant coach for the Super Eagles.
Following a goalless draw against Enyimba in the Nigeria Premier Football League, Ogunmodede and Adebiyi left Remo Stars to the airport on a friendly player-manager note but arrived Abidjan as foes ahead of Thursday's encounter at Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium, Abidjan.
At the airport, Ogunmodede and Adebiyi shared light-hearted banter, with the Super Eagles' assistant coach playfully asserting Nigeria's ambition to secure a victory against Benin.
In response, Adebiyi confidently outlined the Cheetahs determination to clinch a win, a result that would bolster their chances of qualifying for the tournament in Morocco.
Currently, Nigeria leads Group D with 10 points and needs just one more point to secure their place in the AFCON.
In contrast, Benin sits second with six points and must triumph over Nigeria to maintain their lead over third-placed Rwanda, who have five points.
Adding to the intrigue of the fixture, Benin previously achieved a memorable victory against Nigeria in Abidjan during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in June, setting the stage for a potential repeat performance.
While the Super Eagles are eager to exact revenge, the Cheetahs will be bolstered by their recent success.
