'Goalscoring record isn't bad'- Pundit backs Dessers to stay at Rangers next season
Published: March 31, 2025
Daily Record pundit Alan Galindo has heaped praise on the performance of Cyriel Dessers, expressing the possibility of remaining at the Light Blues beyond the current campaign.
Dessers has faced several criticisms this campaign due to his form. The 30-year-old lost his place in the squad with Moroccan forward Hamza Igamane taking his role and delivering for the club under Philip Clement, the previous manager.
The situation sparked uncertainty surrounding his future at Rangers in the winter window.
The Nigerian International was linked with a move to several top European clubs, including Cagliari, Cremonese, Saint Etienne, and Leganes in La Liga.
Despite the interest, the Nigerian International remained at the club and regained his position.
Dessers returned to the first team after a hat-trick in a 5-0 victory over Fraserburgh in the Scottish Cup and a goal against Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League.
He has rediscovered his goalscoring form following the appointment of Barry Ferguson, scoring four goals in four league games, including the winner against Dundee United on Saturday.
His new change of form has raised discussion about his future at the club ahead of the upcoming window, with Galindo believing the Nigerian International could remain beyond the summer.
Galindo suggested Dessers' goal-scoring record needs improvement but praised his movement to get into goal-scoring positions.
"His goalscoring record isn’t all that bad - although it should be much higher. But what he does is gets - in the positions and keeps trying," he told the Daily Record.
While Galindo questioned his ability to lead Rangers to winning trophies, he believes Dessers might be part of the team beyond the current campaign.
"The big question remains if he is the man that can lead the line to win trophies. But I think he can play a part next year."
Dessers has had 30 goal contributions, scoring 23 goals and providing seven assists in 46 matches across all competitions for the Light Blues this campaign.
