Chelsea want permanent sale of ex-Super Eagles defender's nephew, not loan bids

Chelsea have made their stance clear regarding the future of Lesley Ugochukwu, the nephew of retired Nigeria international Onyekachi Apam.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Blues are turning down loan bids for the 21-year-old in favour of a permanent sale.

In search of adequate playing opportunities, Ugochukwu spent the whole of last season at relegated top-flight club Southampton, where he totaled 31 appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal and registering two assists.

Ugochukwu, who joined Chelsea from Rennes in the summer of 2023, has attracted interest from a host of clubs in the summer transfer window.

However, Chelsea have rejected the idea of sending the midfielder out on another loan spell.

Valencia are among several clubs monitoring Ugochukwu's situation, but Chelsea’s insistence on a permanent transfer rather than a temporary switch might prove to be a stumbling block.

Premier League sides are also interested in the France U23 international, though any potential suitor will have to match Chelsea's valuation to secure his services.

He made 15 appearances for Chelsea in an injury-plagued debut season, but his chances of regular first-team football appear slim as he is behind the likes of Enzo Fernández, Moisés Caicedo and Roméo Lavia in the midfield pecking order.

Ugochukwu, who is under contract with Chelsea until June 2030, is among the dual-national players being monitored by Nigeria coach Eric Chelle ahead of the resumption of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
