'Very good player' – Borussia Dortmund chief eyes new deal for Chelsea's Chukwuemeka
Published: July 07, 2025
Borussia Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl has confirmed the club’s intention to keep Carney Chukwuemeka beyond this summer, despite the Chelsea midfielder’s limited impact during his loan spell in Germany.
Chukwuemeka, 21, joined Dortmund on loan in January after struggling to secure game time under Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca, making just five appearances — only one as a starter.
At Dortmund, the England U21 international made 17 appearances in all competitions, scoring once, but started only twice.
Following Dortmund’s exit from the FIFA Club World Cup at the hands of Real Madrid, Kehl explained the Bundesliga side’s stance.
"Carney’s loan ends today. That was what we agreed with Chelsea. Now, let’s see," he told reporters.
"We will definitely have some more discussions in the next few days about his situation.”
Kehl praised Chukwuemeka’s decision to join Dortmund in search of playing time.
"I think it was a good move from Carney to join us. Now let’s see how we manage everything.
"It won’t be easy, but for sure we will try to keep him because he’s a very good player.
"This topic is something for the future, and right now I don’t know what will happen."
Despite being out of favour at Stamford Bridge, Chukwuemeka still has three years remaining on his contract.
Chelsea reportedly value him at £40 million — the figure in his release clause — a price that may prove too steep for Dortmund to meet outright.
Instead, the German club could seek another loan arrangement, potentially including an option or obligation to buy.
Discussions about Chukwuemeka’s future reportedly began in May, as Dortmund weighed their transfer plans ahead of the Club World Cup.
