Walsall defender Okagbue wanted by League One clubs Wigan Athletic and Peterborough United
Published: July 08, 2025
Two League One clubs are battling for the signature of promising defender David Okagbue following his standout campaign with Walsall in League Two.
According to Football League World, both Wigan Athletic and Peterborough United have expressed strong interest in signing the 21-year-old permanently this summer.
Okagbue impressed at Walsall last term, registering two goals and five assists across 47 appearances — a remarkable contribution from a central defender.
Okagbue initially joined Walsall on loan before making the move permanent last summer.
His consistent performances at the back, coupled with his ability to contribute offensively, have made him one of the most sought-after young defenders outside the Championship.
With both Wigan and Peterborough aiming to improve on disappointing campaigns — finishing 15th and 18th respectively in League One — bolstering their defensive lines has become a priority, and Okagbue is seen as a key target to help stabilize their backline.
Although the Dublin-born defender has represented the Republic of Ireland at U19 and U21 levels, he remains eligible to switch allegiance to Nigeria at senior level, a prospect that could further elevate his profile should he continue to rise.
As the summer transfer window gains momentum, Okagbue is expected to consider his options carefully, with the opportunity to play at a higher level and further his development likely to weigh heavily in his decision.
