Renowned Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Arsenal have turned down an approach from Chelsea, who enquired about the possibility of signing Ethan Nwaneri amid ongoing contract renewal talks at the Emirates Stadium.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano revealed that during discussions over Noni Madueke, Chelsea informed Arsenal of their interest in 18-year-old Nwaneri and were prepared to submit a formal bid if Arsenal failed to reach an agreement.
"Chelsea during the discussion for Noni Madueke told Arsenal they were interested in Ethan Nwaneri and prepared to make a bid if Arsenal were not able to agree any contract with the player to avoid losing him for a free next summer to present a bid now," Romano revealed.
However, the Italian transfer expert revealed that Arsenal stood firm, making it clear they had no plans to part ways with the highly-rated midfielder.
"For Arsenal that was a no, Arsenal never had the intention to let Nwaneri go.
"Basically, the conversation was very advanced with Nwaneri. Then from players' camp, they wanted some clarity about game time, the project, and vision from Arsenal."
Romano revealed that, in response to Chelsea's approach, Arsenal reopened talks with the player's representatives to outline their development plan and long-term vision for him.
"Arsenal had new contacts in the last 48 hours with the camp (agent and his family) of Nwaneri to present the idea of Mikel Arteta, the trust from the club, and the trust from the staff in Ethan Nwaneri and his development."
Following the discussions, he revealed that the Gunners are now confident of securing an agreement with the youngster to extend his contract beyond next summer.
"Arsenal are making progress, they are hopeful to get the greenlight soon from Nwaneri, and extend his contract as soon as possible.”
"Arsenal are now optimistic after some difficult moment in the negotiations.
"Chelsea tried to enter into the story but Arsenal maintained their control in their optimism and made progress in talks with Ethan Nwaneri to extend his contract."
Nwaneri, who became the Premier League’s youngest-ever debutant at 15, remains a central figure in Arsenal’s future plans.
Ahead of the new season, Arsenal are hoping Ethan Nwaneri will sign a contract extension to avoid losing another top academy talent, following the departures of Chido Obi Martin and Ayden Heaven to Manchester United over the last two transfer windows.
