'Spoke to me' - Rangers starlet reveals what experienced striker Dessers told him
Published: July 17, 2025
Rangers starlet Josh Gentles has opened up on the valuable mentorship he's received from experienced striker Cyriel Dessers during his time training with the first team at St. George's Park.
Gentles featured in the Light Blues' preseason friendly against Club Brugge, disclosed that both Dessers and fellow forward Danilo offered him crucial guidance on improving his game.
Speaking to the club's official website, Gentles revealed that the Nigerian international advised him to work on his positioning and movement.
"Cyriel [Dessers] and Danilo have spoken to me quite a lot about small things such as positioning and where to run to," Gentles said.
"The advice is coming from top players who have been there and done what you want to go on and do. I couldn't ask for any better advice."
The young striker admitted that he benefitted from the delayed return of Dessers and Hamza Igamane to preseason training, which gave him a rare opportunity to showcase his ability alongside the senior team.
"When I heard Danilo was the only other No.9 in training at the time it gave me a chance to impress," Gentles added.
"I feel like I took that chance, whereas if Cyriel [Dessers] and Hamza [Igamane] were back straight away then I may not have gotten the opportunity.
Dessers ended the 2024/25 Scottish Premiership campaign as league's top scorer with 18 goals in 35 appearances.
However, despite his contributions, speculation continues to mount over his future at the club, with Greek side AEK Athens reportedly interested in securing his services.
With the 2025/26 season fast approaching, Dessers will be keen to resolve his club situation to maintain his form and remain in contention for a spot in the Super Eagles squad as Nigeria continues preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
