Boniface pocketed by Tosin as Chelsea beat Bayer Leverkusen; Tella and George start

Chelsea kicked off their 2025/26 preseason with a 2–0 win over Bayer Leverkusen, as Tosin Adarabioyo produced a commanding defensive display to nullify Victor Boniface.

Brazilian wonderkid Estêvão Willian broke the deadlock in the first half, calmly slotting home to give the Blues the lead in the 17th minute.

João Pedro then sealed the victory late on, converting a neat move to cap off a composed team performance under new boss Enzo Maresca.

Maresca handed starting berths to Tyrique George, who is linked with a move away this summer.

George, whose future at Stamford Bridge remains uncertain amid transfer links, was lively down the flank before being replaced by new signing Jamie Gittens on 64 minutes.

However, Tella, a key figure for Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen side last term, worked tirelessly before making way in the 81st minute for Montrell Amare Culbreath.

Tosin, vying to step in for the injured Levi Colwill, delivered an assured display after replacing Trevoh Chalobah in the second half.

The former Manchester City centre-back exuded calm and authority, keeping Victor Boniface l, who was introduced for Patrick Schick with 18 minutes remaining, quiet and largely out of the game.

With the 2025/26 campaign approaching, Tosin will take confidence from his display as he aims to cement a regular spot in Colwill’s absence.

Meanwhile, Boniface will be eager to sharpen his form in a bid to win over Erik ten Hag, with Schick providing stiff competition for the starting role.
