'Promising for him' – Liverpool coach Slot urges patience with Ngumoha amid pre-season hype
Published: August 08, 2025
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has emphasized the importance of carefully managing Rio Ngumoha and other emerging talents at the club following their impressive performances in pre-season.
Ngumoha, who arrived from Chelsea last year, made a strong impression this summer by scoring three goals across matches against Stoke City, Yokohama F. Marinos, and Athletic Bilbao.
His performances have sparked growing excitement among fans, with many calling for the 16-year-old to be fast-tracked into the senior squad.
Speaking at his press conference ahead of Sunday's Community Shield clash with Crystal Palace, Slot acknowledged Ngumoha's rise, but stressed the importance of protecting the player's development.
"He and Trey [Nyoni] have an incredible chance to work and be around players like Virgil van Dijk and Mo Salah every day," Slot was quoted as saying by The BBC.
"To see what they do to be ready to perform every three days and that is a step these players have to take and that is completely normal."
Despite the buzz, the Reds manager urged caution with the club's young players to ensure they develop properly and reach their full potential.
"We want to develop them the best way we can but we also have to take care of them," Slot added.
"We are aware of that but it has been promising for him like for Trey as well."
After a standout preseason, Ngumoha will be hoping for an opportunity to feature against Crystal Palace as the Reds aim to secure their first trophy of the season.
