'Mad few days for me' – Akpom explains why he chose Ipswich over Birmingham and Middlesbrough

Chuba Akpom's transfer saga is over with Ipswich Town confirming the loan signing of the Ajax Amsterdam striker on Sunday.

Birmingham City were interested in the Hale End Academy graduate but pulled out of the race after the 29-year-old made it clear to them and Ajax Amsterdam that he wanted to join the Tractor Boys.

Akpom has joined Ipswich Town on a season-long loan deal with an obligation to buy for £7 million if the Tractor Boys are promoted to the Premier League.

The Ajax loanee revealed that Ipswich Town's ambition and playing style were decisive factors in his decision to join the club despite interest from Championship rivals Middlesbrough and Birmingham City.

The Super Eagles hopeful admitted the past week had been hectic as he finalized the move but expressed his delight at securing the switch.

When quizzed on his decision to join Ipswich Town despite attracting interest from Middlesbrough and Birmingham City, Chuba Akpom told Sky Sports: "I was really excited when I heard about the interest.

"Obviously, it has been a mad few days for me sorting everything out but I'm glad to be here.

"The club has massive ambition, the way the team plays, the way the gaffer has got the boys moving the ball, it seems like a really dedicated team. So, I am excited to be here."

The former Middlesbrough striker explained that Ipswich's style of play has long appealed to him, believing it aligns perfectly with his strengths.

"I watch a lot of football and I've seen how Ipswich have been playing the last two seasons and I've always thought it suited my style a lot.

"As soon as I spoke to the coach, he showed me how he wanted me to play and it just made perfect sense."

In his final season with Middlesbrough, Akpom clinched the Championship Golden Boot after registering 28 goals in 38 outings.
