Chelsea ready to offload Super Eagles-eligible duo in bid for RB Leipzig midfielder
Published: August 11, 2025
Chelsea are reportedly open to parting ways with Super Eagles-eligible duo Carney Chukwuemeka and Tyrique George, as part of ongoing discussions with German club RB Leipzig over the potential signing of midfielder Xavi Simons, according to BBC Sport.
As the Premier League season approaches its kickoff this weekend, Chelsea are exploring various options to reshape their squad under manager Enzo Maresca.
Carney Chukwuemeka, 21, joined Chelsea from Aston Villa in 2022 amid high expectations but has faced challenges establishing himself in the first team.
Injuries and stiff competition in midfield have limited his opportunities. Despite these setbacks, his technical skills and versatility continue to be highly regarded within the club.
Chelsea’s willingness to include Chukwuemeka in transfer talks suggests Maresca is considering significant changes to the squad composition.
The midfielder remains under contract with Chelsea until June 2028, but the club is keen to offload him permanently, both to streamline their wage bill and to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations.
Tyrique George, 19, is one of Chelsea’s brightest academy prospects, known for his pace and creativity.
He has made 26 senior appearances for Chelsea, with notable contributions including a goal in a 2-1 Premier League victory over Fulham and a strike in the 3-0 FIFA Club World Cup triumph against Esperance de Tunis.
In June 2024, George made history as the youngest player to score for Chelsea at the Fifa Club World Cup, netting at just 19 years and 141 days old.
During the 2024/25 campaign, George registered eight goal involvements in all competitions for the first team.
RB Leipzig remains undecided on whether to take either player, with the German side reportedly evaluating Chukwuemeka’s readiness for top-level football and George’s long-term potential before making a commitment.
Chelsea, meanwhile, are eager to progress negotiations as they look to balance squad development with financial considerations ahead of the new season.
