Transfer expert Ornstein confirms Nwaneri is switching from right wing to midfield at Arsenal
Published: August 14, 2025
Transfer expert David Ornstein has revealed the positions Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta plans to use rising star Ethan Nwaneri this season, following the youngster’s contract extension at the Emirates Stadium.
Nwaneri, who had a breakout campaign last season, was close to leaving the club in the summer window as he demanded more assurance for more game time in the 2025/2026 season.
With a determination to keep the talented academy graduate, the club convinced him to sign a contract extension by presenting a plan that guarantees his playing time despite the competition for places in the team.
Despite the ability to play in several positions, Ornstein revealed the Gunners manager is planning to deploy the young midfielder in his favourite midfield position.
He emphasized Arteta plan to deploy Nwaneri as an attacking midfielder or central midfielder to help control and dictate the tempo of games when needed.
"I think it (a move for Eberechi Eze) was being looked at when there was a possibility of Ethan Nwaneri, the young talent, leaving because he was in the last year of his contract," David Ornstein told The Sports Agents YouTube channel.
"Because Arsenal now see him in the 8 to 10 role as opposed to the right side where he played last season."
During his breakthrough campaign, the 18-year-old was deployed in several positions, including midfield, right-wing position, and sometimes as a false nine.
He predominantly featured in the right wing position, often seen as a replacement for star player Bukola Saraki during his time on the sideline due to injury.
Buoyed by the coach’s trust to play in his preferred position, Nwaneri will be determined to impress and repay the faith shown by the club and manager.
