Boost for Sevilla and Eric Chelle as Ejuke recovers from injury ahead of season opener and WCQs

Sevilla have received a timely boost ahead of their La Liga clash with Athletic Club, as Nigerian forward Chidera Ejuke returned to full training on Wednesday following a period on the sidelines due to injury.

Ejuke’s comeback is equally welcome news for Super Eagles manager Eric Chelle, who is expected to finalise his squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers within the next two weeks.

Nigeria will face Rwanda in Uyo on September 6, before taking on South Africa in Bloemfontein three days later.

The 27-year-old has yet to feature under Chelle, with his last call-up dating back to October 2024 during the Africa Nations Cup qualifiers.

His return to fitness comes as Sevilla prepare for Sunday's trip to San Mamés, offering head coach Matías Almeyda a much-needed attacking option.

Ejuke, known for his pace, creativity, and flair, is expected to inject dynamism into Sevilla’s frontline.

His versatility allows him to operate on either wing or in a more central role, giving Almeyda tactical flexibility against a physically robust Athletic side.

The timing of his return is particularly crucial given Sevilla’s demanding early-season fixtures, which include matches against Girona and Getafe immediately after facing Athletic Club.

While it remains unclear whether he will start on Sunday, his participation in full training signals he is close to full match readiness, providing optimism for both club and country.
